• 3 min read

We just wrapped up Hacktoberfest and want to share all the developer contributions for the past month. Here are previous posts on Hacktoberfest 2023:

We did a live stream recapping Hacktoberfest 2023:

This post covers Hacktoberfest: contributing to open source and building with Nylas.

Hacktoberfest by the Numbers

  • Contributions combined for approximately 25k lines of code, including readme instructions.
  • In total, over 30 code samples were created showing different ways to build with Nylas APIs to connect Calendar, Contacts, and Emails.
  • We received code samples in four different languages (JavaScript, Python, Java/Kotlin, and Ruby)

Building with Nylas APIs

Developers were able to build with the Nylas APIs using our sandbox environment, which is a free tier to build and explore the Nylas APIs for Email, Calendar, and Contacts. Being able to connect a user was possible through our developer dashboard, so a seamless experience for developers building code samples for Hacktoberfest.

Developers were able to take on approachable GitHub tickets to build Nylas API calls to retrieve various forms of communication data such as calendar events, and even create real-time webhooks to track for updates to a user’s calendar. Some developers were able to complete tickets within a short time period, showing how straightforward it is to build using Nylas.

Nylas provides SDKs for Java/Kotlin, Node, Python and Ruby where developers were able to use our SDKs to build code samples for interacting with users’ Emails, Calendars and Contacts.

Developers Building with Nylas

Let’s share some details about developers contributing Nylas code samples for hacktoberfest:

Contributing to Open Source

Open source projects give developers an opportunity to grow their skills and try different languages or APIs. Being able to pick up and learn new APIs and languages helps developers gain exposure. Whether it be diving into a new programming language or connect with developers to receive domain knowledge. Contributing to open source is a great opportunity to grow an online presence and showcase your work.

Building with Nylas was a great opportunity for developers to take on smaller tasks which are a great way to build confidence and receive feedback from the developer community. The Developer Relations team at Nylas enjoyed supporting developers and we welcome contributions to the Nylas code samples all year around! We love the opportunity to collaborate and improve the developer experience at Nylas.
